5 Things to Check Before Booking an ECU Remap

Booking an ECU remap is a 60-90 minute appointment and a few hundred pounds – so it’s worth taking ten minutes to make sure you’re booking the right tuner for your car. These five checks protect your engine, your warranty, and your wallet.

Why these 5 checks matter

The ECU remap industry has a wide range of quality. At one end, properly-trained mobile tuners using dealer-level diagnostic equipment, custom-written files and a transparent process. At the other end, “remaps” loaded from a generic library on a £20 tool, with no diagnostic and no warranty. The difference between the two shows up in drivability, reliability, and your car’s long-term health.

These five checks filter the good from the bad.

1. Do they run a pre-job diagnostic?

Any tuner worth booking should run a full system fault-code read and live-data check before writing any new software. The diagnostic tells you (and the tuner) whether the engine is healthy enough to tune, whether there are pre-existing issues that will limit the gains, and whether the car is a good candidate for the file you want.

If a tuner says “just bring the car, we’ll do it in 30 minutes” – that’s a red flag. The diagnostic is non-negotiable.

Boostcore runs a full pre-job diagnostic on every Stage 1 remap. It’s part of the standard service, not an optional extra.

2. Is the file custom-written or generic?

There’s a big difference between a file written for your specific engine, ECU software level and goals, and a generic map pulled from a tuner’s library. Generic maps are written to work on a wide range of cars in a wide range of conditions – which means they’re not optimised for any of them. Custom files are calibrated to the engine, the fuel quality, and the use case.

Ask the tuner: “Is this file written specifically for my car, or is it pulled from a library?” The answer tells you a lot.

Boostcore writes every file for the specific car. We confirm the ECU type and software level before booking, and the file is calibrated to the platform and the goals.

3. Do they save and return your original file?

A proper remap should always start with reading and saving your original ECU file. This is your safety net – if anything goes wrong, if you want the car returned to stock for a warranty claim or a sale, or if you want to try a different file, the original is preserved.

Ask: “Will I get my original file back, and on what?” Boostcore returns the original file on a labelled USB stick at the end of every remap, and keeps a backup in our archive.

4. What’s included in the price?

The all-in price should include: travel to your location, the pre-job diagnostic, the custom file, the post-job check, the road test, and the original file on USB. If the quote excludes any of these, ask why.

Hidden extras to watch for: “diagnostic fee on top”, “DSG re-cal is an extra £300”, “we’ll need to keep the car for a second visit if the file doesn’t work first time”. The first two are sometimes legitimate, but they should be quoted up-front, not on the day. The third is a sign of a bad file library.

Boostcore’s quote is all-in, with no hidden extras. The DSG / TCU re-cal is quoted separately and only if you want it.

5. What’s the warranty on the software?

Any reputable tuner offers a lifetime software warranty – if the file ever causes an issue (it shouldn’t, but if it does), they re-flash the car to a working file at no charge. A lifetime warranty is the industry standard. If a tuner offers less, ask why.

Boostcore offers a lifetime software warranty on every Stage 1 remap. The file is designed to be reliable, and the warranty is the safety net if anything ever changes.

Red flag checklist

  • “No diagnostic needed” – red flag
  • “Generic map for £100” – red flag (probably the same as a £20 tool load)
  • “We won’t return your original file” – red flag (how will you ever go back to stock?)
  • “Cash only, no invoice” – red flag (no paper trail, no warranty)
  • “We can do it in 20 minutes” – red flag (a proper remap with diagnostic takes 60-90 minutes)
  • “We can also delete your DPF / EGR / AdBlue” – red flag (illegal on UK public roads)

What a good tuner will ask

A good tuner will ask for: your registration, your current mileage, any warning lights on the dashboard, what you use the car for (commute, family, performance, towing), and what your priorities are (power, economy, or balanced). The answers shape the file and the recommendation.

Documentation to keep

After the remap, keep: the invoice (for warranty and insurance), the original ECU file on USB (for return-to-stock), and a screenshot of the live data after the remap (proof the file loaded correctly). Boostcore provides all three.

What to do if the work goes wrong

If something goes wrong with a remap – the car goes into limp mode, a warning light comes on, the engine sounds different – the tuner should be on the phone immediately and back at your car the next working day. A lifetime software warranty covers the fix. If the tuner isn’t reachable or won’t come back, that’s the moment to walk away from them permanently.

Frequently asked questions

How do I check if a tuner is reputable?

Look for: a proper website with a real address and a real phone number, a clear description of the diagnostic process, transparent pricing, a lifetime software warranty, and reviews on Google or Trustpilot. Avoid anyone who can’t be reached after the booking.

Is mobile remapping as good as a workshop?

Yes – mobile tuners use the same equipment, the same software, and the same diagnostic process as a workshop. The only difference is they come to you. Boostcore is a fully mobile service across Southampton, Hampshire and the surrounding area.

Should I book the cheapest or the most expensive?

Neither – book the one that does the diagnostic properly, writes the file for your car, returns the original file, and offers a lifetime warranty. The cheapest is usually cheap for a reason. The most expensive isn’t always the best.
