Engine Variants We Remap

The Sprinter's two main engine families — the 2.1 CDI OM651 inline-4 and the 3.0 V6 CDI OM642 — both respond well to a custom Stage 1 file:

  • W906 (2006–2018) — 2.1 CDI 209, 211, 213, 215, 216 CDI variants. Bosch EDC17C10 / EDC17CP10. Read via OBD on most. The 3.0 V6 318 and 319 CDI uses the EDC17CP46.
  • W907 / W910 (2018–present) — 2.1 CDI 311, 314, 316 CDI and the 3.0 V6 319 CDI. The 2018+ ECUs run on Bosch MD1 / EDC17 platforms with tighter security. Most need bench work rather than OBD.

We confirm the exact ECU type and software level before quoting, so the file is matched to your specific van — and the file is calibrated for a working van, not a family car. More low-end torque, sharper throttle response, less box protection at low revs.

The 2.1 CDI 129 bhp is the volume-seller. A Stage 1 remap lifts torque into the 400 Nm region, which is night-and-day for a panel van under load. The OM651 is a well-understood engine with strong file support.

What a Sprinter Stage 1 Remap Feels Like

More Torque Below 2,000 rpm

Where a working van lives. Stage 1 lifts torque and holds it lower in the rev range, so the van doesn't have to be revved to get going. Heel-toe work on a round-a-bout is much easier.

Box Confidence

The 6-speed manual doesn't need so many downchanges. The 7G-Tronic auto holds gears longer, drops less, and protects the clutch less aggressively under load. Less wear and easier drive.

Better MPG, Especially Unladen

On an economy map the Sprinter can return 5–10% better MPG on motorway runs. The unladen return run (empty coming back from a delivery) is where the gain is biggest — much less throttle needed to maintain speed.

Useful for Towing

For Sprinters used as horsebox transports, car transporters, tipper-chassis or caravan haulers, the torque gain at low revs is transformative. Hill starts and overtakes stop being a stress test.

How We Remap a Sprinter

The job takes around 90 minutes on a Sprinter 2.1 CDI and slightly longer on the 3.0 V6 or the latest W907 MD1 platform. We come to your depot, your workshop or your home — anywhere in Southampton, Hampshire or the wider area.

  1. Pre-job diagnostic. Full live-data read — boost pressure, DPF pressure differential, EGR position, injector corrections, MAF, fuel trim, AdBlue dosing. We confirm the engine is healthy enough to tune, and flag any issues before we write a new file.
  2. Read the original ECU file. OBD on most W906 2.1 CDI / 3.0 V6. Bench work on the latest MD1-protected W907 ECUs. Original file is saved and given to you on USB afterwards.
  3. Write the Stage 1 file. Calibrated for a working van — torque biased to the lower rev range, throttle response sharpened, gearbox protection relaxed where it limits useful torque.
  4. Post-job checks. Fault code re-read, live data re-check, a short road test under load, and the original file returned to you on USB for safekeeping.

Compatibility & Hardware

Stage 1 vs Stage 2, and What You Don't Need to Change

Standard Hardware

Stage 1 is software-only. The OEM turbo, injectors, DPF, EGR and AdBlue stay. The van looks completely standard from underneath — useful for lease returns, warranty and resale.

Manual & 7G-Tronic

We tune both the 6-speed manual and the 7G-Tronic automatic. The auto's torque limiters are recalibrated to match the Stage 1 output. The box then works as Mercedes intended but with the engine's full torque available.

Panel Van, Chassis Cab, Tipper

Same file across body styles. Chassis cabs and tippers benefit the most because the file can be biased for heavier payload work without over-stressing the OEM drivetrain.

DPF & EGR

Stage 1 keeps the DPF and EGR fully operational. Regeneration continues to run as designed. If your DPF is showing signs of blockage — high pressure differential, frequent regens — we may recommend a clean first.

AdBlue / SCR

AdBlue and the SCR catalyst are preserved. Stage 1 doesn't touch the NOx control system. If you're seeing AdBlue warning lights or countdowns to no-start, we can diagnose those separately.

Stage 2 (Heads-Up)

Stage 2 — typically +80–110 bhp — requires a high-flow downpipe, an uprated intercooler, an intake and (on manuals) often a clutch. We develop Stage 2 files in-house and quote on application once hardware is fitted.
